The Tanning Process
A lot of clients want to tan as often and for as long as possible in order to
get the deepest, darkest tan. This not only wastes money but is also unsafe.
Tanning occurs due to changes in melanin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. But
people produce limited melanin in everyday life. Tanning beds emit UVA and UVB
radiation in specific levels to maximize melanin production and tanning. The
first week that a client tans, he/she should only tan for short periods every
other day. This increases the production of melanin. After the first week
melanin levels should be increased, and tanning every day promotes color
changes in the melanin while promoting more melanin production. This
tanning process reaches its maximum after 4 weeks. At that point tanning the
maximum time allowed by the bed manufacturer (12 minutes with our beds) twice a
week will maintain the best tan possible without doing excess damage to your
skin. To determine how long clients should tan throughout this process, we use
the chart at the bottom of the
Client Release
Form. This chart is the result of considerable research by the bed
manufacturer.
